WLACC National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.  The new NYLT syllabus, updated in 2021 by a National Task Force of NYLT volunteers, incorporates the latest Fortune 500 leadership ideas and presents a fresh, vital and meaningful training for today’s Scouts that they can take back to their home units and back to their personal lives.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of the WHY of leadership and the subsequent ideas of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO. These elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO accomplish them.

NYLT is a six-day course, taught entirely by youth who have been through the course before and have returned to take on a staff role.   The course content is delivered in an outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun Scouting environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. Practical team building activities and programs also reinforce those concepts.

NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through hands on activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged by their peers in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill to lead with confidence.

NYLT puts into action the best that Scouting has to offer. Taught by the youth for the youth - it is invaluable training for all Scouts who meet the registration requirements!

In order to attend a NYLT course, a youth must have the following qualifications by the beginning of the course:

• Must be a registered member of a Scouting unit.
• Must have a current BSA Health and Medical Record form parts A, B, and C.
• Scouts BSA members (male and female) must be at least 13, attain the rank of First Class, and must have their Scoutmaster's recommendation prior to registering. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops.
• Venturers and Sea Scouts (male and female) must be at least 14, or 13 and have completed eighth grade, and fall within the maximum age allowance for their program. They must have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews or Ships. It is recommended that they have had at least one year of camping experience. While NYLT is not an outdoor skills course, it is important that each participant have basic camping and outdoor cooking experience.
