Junior Basic Backpacking Awareness Course

 

This course is designed for scouts who wish to learn about the fun that backpacking can add to scouting. It is also an opportunity to build on your outdoor skills and leader training. Expand your knowledge of the challenges with different terrain & develop the confidence to hike more safely, backpack & camp with your unit. Upon completion, you will receive a HAT Gray Card, which allows you to take other Awareness Seminars & obtain additional HAT completion strips.

 

The course will teach you how to prepare for and enjoy backpacking. Course subjects will teach map & compass, cooking, personal and troop gear, weather, health & safety, and all the other things you need to know to plan and conduct a safe, rewarding troop/crew outing.

 

Who should attend:         

Any BSA registered youth who is approaching First Class Rank or above.

Minimum recommended age of 13. Scouts younger than 13 must have scoutmaster speak with

course instructor prior to registration (contact info below).

No backpacking experience required.

 

When:                            

Classroom Session: September 24, 2022, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Outdoor Session: October 8-9, All Weekend

(Sunrise at trail head, Should be back by 2:00pm Sunday)

Required to bring:           

Classroom Session: Field uniform, compass, paper, pen or pencil. A completed consent form and current part A & B medical form is required at the classroom session (no exceptions; parents must stay to take the Scout home until both forms are approved). An hour lunch break will be provided; please bring your own lunch. We will be meeting outdoors with shade canopies; however, sun protection is still recommended. Camp chair or other seat is recommended.

Outdoor Session: Utility uniform (aka class B), transportation to and from the outdoor session, any medications, and hiking clothing appropriate for weather conditions; equipment and items essential for a 2-day backpacking trip, including 1 O+ Essentials, stove, cook kit & utensils, backpacking tent and sleeping gear, plus three backpack meals for Saturday, lunch, dinner, and Sunday breakfast. Patrol Method.

 

Registration Cost:  

$30.00. This does not include the cost of food or transportation.
