Adult Winter Backpacking Awareness Course
This course is designed for adult scout leaders who wish to expand their backpacking and camping skills into the winter season. It is also an opportunity to build on your outdoor skills and leader training. Expand your knowledge of the challenges with different terrain & develop the confidence to hike more safely, backpack & camp in snow and ice with your unit. Upon completion, you will receive the winter backpacking patch and the confidence to lead your unit on cold weather outings.
Course subjects will cover topics on winter driving, winter camping & backpacking equipment, trail food & cooking, weather, health & safety, avalanche safety, winter campsite locations, and how to construct snow caves, shelters & igloos.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Any BSA registered adult leader who has completed a BSA HAT Adult Basic Backpacking Course and wants to expand their outdoor skills into the winter season.
WHEN:
Classroom Session: January 20, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Outdoor Session: January 27-28*, All Weekend
(Sunrise at trail head I Should be back by 2:00pm Sunday)

*The HATeam will adhere to current health guidelines regarding Covid-19.
REQUIRED TO BRING:
Classroom Session: Be prepared to take notes on recommended gear and clothing needed for a winter outdoor course.
Outdoor Session: Utility uniform (aka class B), transportation to and from the outdoor session, any medications, and hiking clothing appropriate for weather conditions; equipment and items essential for a 2-day backpacking trip, including 10 Essentials, stove, cook kit & utensils, backpacking tent and sleeping gear, plus three backpack meals for Saturday, lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast. Patrol Method.
REGISTRATION COST: $30.00. This does not include the cost of food or transportation.
