Adult Winter Backpacking Awareness Course

This course is designed for adult scout leaders who wish to expand their backpacking and camping skills into the winter season. It is also an opportunity to build on your outdoor skills and leader training. Expand your knowledge of the challenges with different terrain & develop the confidence to hike more safely, backpack & camp in snow and ice with your unit. Upon completion, you will receive the winter backpacking patch and the confidence to lead your unit on cold weather outings.

Course subjects will cover topics on winter driving, winter camping & backpacking equipment, trail food & cooking, weather, health & safety, avalanche safety, winter campsite locations, and how to construct snow caves, shelters & igloos.
