Adult Basic Backpacking Awareness Course
This course is designed for registered adult scout leaders who wish to learn about the fun that backpacking can add to scouting. It is also an opportunity to build on your outdoor skills and leader training. Expand your knowledge of the challenges with different terrain & develop the confidence to hike more safely, backpack & camp with your unit. Upon completion, you will receive a HAT Blue Card, which allows you to take other Awareness Seminars & obtain additional HAT completion strips.
The course will teach you how to prepare for and enjoy backpacking. Course subjects will teach map & compass, cooking, personal and troop gear, weather, health & safety, and all the other things you need to know to plan and conduct a safe, rewarding troop/crew outing.
Who should attend:
Any BSA registered adult leader.
No backpacking experience required.
When:
Classroom Session: September 7, 8a-4p (in person)
Outdoor Session: September 21-22, All Weekend
(Sunrise at trail head, Should be back by 2:00pm Sunday)
Where:
Classroom Session: In person TBD
Outdoor Session: To Be Determined
*The HATeam will adhere to current health guidelines regarding Covid-19.
More details on transportation will be discussed during the classroom session. Carpools are a possibility.
Required to bring:
Classroom Session: You will be provided a link to 8 hours of required video modules, which must be watched prior to our classroom session.
Outdoor Session: Utility uniform (aka class B), transportation to and from the outdoor session, any medications, and hiking clothing appropriate for weather conditions; equipment and items essential for a 2-day backpacking trip, including 10 Essentials, stove, cook kit & utensils, backpacking tent and sleeping gear, plus three backpack meals for Saturday, lunch, dinner and Sunday breakfast. Patrol Method.
Registration Cost:
$30.00. This does not include the cost of food or transportation.
