Dear Scouts and Scouters,

We are excited to announce our next Camp Josepho Service Day, and much anticipated lumber milling, is scheduled for Saturday, March 21st!  This workday is open to Adults and Scouts BSA aged youth (10 years) and above. A special note, Webelos and Arrow of Light may attend with a parent but may only participate in the Invasive Plant Removal Activities. This is a great opportunity to put the Scout Oath and Law into action through conservation work, teamwork, and outdoor stewardship.

When: Saturday, March 21, 2026, 7:00am-4pm
Where: Camp Josepho

Arrival and schedule:
Please arrive at the Sullivan Fire Road entrance at 7:00am to allow time for driving in on the dirt road, parking, and check-in. Carpooling is highly recommended and encouraged.  A mandatory safety briefing will begin at 7:45am. The day will wrap up around 4:00 p.m.  Please plan to work the full day.

Directions and rules of the road:

https://www.campjosepho.org/getting-to-camp/

The road is shared with many hikers and bikers, please DRIVE SLOW and stick to the cliff side of the road.  Plan accordingly, it takes approximately 30min to get to camp after turning on Sullivan Fire Road.

There will be a staff member at the yellow gate to check cars in.  If assistance is needed, please contact Nate at 310-870-7043

We’ll be working together on two projects.  Volunteers can rotate between projects, so everyone will have the chance to help in multiple ways.

  • Invasive plant removal - Volunteers will help remove invasive plants to protect native species and restore the camp’s ecosystem. The work will be done manually with hand tools, guided by demonstrations on plant identification and safe removal techniques.
  • Lumber milling support - Two portable sawmills will be operating under the guidance of professional operators as we mill trees from the camp that did not survive the fire. Participants will help with auxiliary tasks such as moving boards, applying end sealant, and stacking lumber. Youth will not operate the saws but will have a chance to observe and assist safely.

Participants should bring:

  • Work gloves and sturdy footwear
  • Recommended: eye and ear protection (some will be provided on site)
  • Weather and task appropriate clothing (pants recommended)
  • A filled water bottle (or two) and your own lunch
  • Snacks and refreshments will be provided
  • Pruners and other plant removal tools (shovels, spades, forks, mattocks)
  • Folding chairs for breaks

Bathrooms with NON-POTABLE water will be available.  There is no cell service at the camp, however, we do Wi-Fi available through Starlink if necessary.

Thank you for helping restore Camp Josepho and revitalize its natural environment.  Let’s make a positive impact on our Camp while having fun, learning new skills, and living the Scout Spirit!
